Spare Change
I would be working for Southwest Airlines making six figures today had I not quit my job as a flight attendant 29 years ago. Being a flight attendant was the only job, besides being a mom, that I was ever really good at. I loved it, but I chose the well being of my daughters over my career. Leaving them at home with their unpredictable, drunken father was not an option.
I will never regret my decision. After our divorce, my ex made me Public Enemy No. 1 and painted himself the victim of my evil scheme to hold him accountable and abide by the court ordered decree to financially provide for his children. “Get a job,” said the pilot making over $100K a year who never paid for their insurance, dental, braces, surgeries, transportation or education. Yes, I worked. Worked my ass off to give my girls what I could afford. I made insane choices that made our life with a narcissistic, alcoholic asshole feel like a walk in the park. Back my feral ass into a corner and I will always do what any single mom would do. Fight. I fought for my kids. Bled for them. Begged for their forgiveness and kept fucking going. Imagine the primal exultation of being able to scrounge together $5 in quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies for a Little Caesar’s hot ‘n ready pizza for your hungry kids, or driving your daughter to work with the hazards on in a car with a busted transmission you can’t afford to fix, of never being able to put more than $10 worth of gas in said car—for YEARS—of your daughter reaching out to her father for help buying a prom dress and him refusing, always flat out refusing…I could go on and on and on.Yes, we struggled. But we grew stronger. We made our way. And now? We are abundant in ways I never imagined possible when we were slogging through god awful shit on a daily basis. The appreciation and gratitude that we have for so many things that people take for granted makes us truly and wholly wealthy. We want for nothing.
We are free.
